Extreme sports, it seems, feature on most people’s top 50 list of things to do before dying. Research carried out across the web on 100 so-called bucket list blogs by Activity People – the UK’s largest network of extreme sports providers – shows the most common things people want to do before ‘kicking the bucket’ are skydiving, parachuting, bungee jumping, scuba diving, hot air ballooning and driving a Formula 1 car.

More unusual sports that feature include: riding a bull for eight seconds, heli-skiing – where a helicopter takes the skiers to inaccessible slopes  and wing-walking.

Considered the master of all bucket lists, this outlines the top ‘things to do before I die’. Rebecca Rudkin, a spokesperson for Activity People, said: ‘It shows that people either want to visit a particular place such as the pyramids or the Grand Canyon or experience an adrenalin sport like sky diving. See the list here

‘Rather than being depressing, most people regard the lists as a bit of fun and a reminder that life is short and if we really want to do something, we need to get on and do it. We are, after all, a long time dead,’ added Rebecca. To make more of living, click here.

Is paintball a safe sport? Well, judging by the above video it is safer than water melon throwing. Ouch! A study by the US National Safety Office of over 1,000 sports participants puts paintball ahead of bowling in terms of safety with the majority of injuries due to people not wearing eye protection.

In the UK the Royal Society of Prevention for Accidents (RoSPA) reports that out of approximately one million paintball participants in the UK around only 400 people suffered leg, knee and ankle sprains. If you want to try paintball, click here.

The image of the over 60s sitting by the fireside with their slippers and a blanket over the knees is wrong and patronising according to a number of recent reports. Age UK – a charity which champions the issues faced by older people – identifies a rising trend in the number of over 60s taking up extreme sports.

The charity puts the increased participation in adventure activities of older age groups down to a number of factors, saying: ‘Reduced working hours, retirement and fewer financial and family responsibilities mean that the opportunity for experiencing new thrills has suddenly become more accessible.’

According to The Activity People – the UK’s largest network of adventure sports – enquires from the over-60 age group are up 19 per cent in 2010 on the previous year. ‘Water sports, hot air ballooning, zorbing, skydiving and quad biking are all activities that are popular with this age group,’ said a spokesperson for the company.

Alongside the rising numbers of over 60s taking part in extreme sports, there has been an increase in the number of injuries in this age group. The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA) reported that more than a third of the 212 people in British scuba diving incidents requiring medical treatment last year were over 50.

But Aged UK believes the benefits of a more active retirement far outweigh the potential injuries. ‘The more active we are, the more strength and balance we have, and the lower our risk of heart disease and raised cholesterol. Combine physical activity with the great outdoors – where most extreme sports take place – and you’ve got two fantastic ingredients for a happy, healthy lifestyle,’ states the charity.

The charity also highlights the social benefits of extreme sports: ‘Another great thing about getting involved in extreme sports – no matter what age you are – is the social aspect. Widening your friendship group by linking up with other like-minded thrill seekers can be hugely rewarding – especially as meeting new people can become challenging as we get older.’

Activity People’s advice to its older customers is: ‘A lot of activities like hot air ballooning are less strenuous than others. But if you do want to do a strenuous activity such as scuba diving we advise that you get a doctor’s note declaring yourself fit.’

Janet, who’s a retired teacher in her 70s, joined a group of friends to celebrate her birthday with a skydive. ‘It’s something I have always wanted to do and it was wonderful. We had a terrific time,’ she said.

But she discovered they weren’t the oldest skydivers. ‘Our instructor told us he had a woman in her 90s skydiving,’ she said.

According to the New Scientist, the things that make you happy can extend your life by up to ten years.  Clearly, skydiving does it for these women.  Check out a range of activities for all ages and fitness ranges by clicking here.

How can I start clay pigeon shooting? https://adrenamag.com/how-can-i-start-clay-pigeon-shooting/ https://adrenamag.com/how-can-i-start-clay-pigeon-shooting/#comments Fri, 23 Aug 2013 16:18:31 +0000 http://adrenamag.com/?p=3190 Where to start clay shooting/

The post How can I start clay pigeon shooting? appeared first on ADRENAMAG.

]]>

‘Where can I do clay pigeon shooting?’ was a question asked by Steve, a 49-year-old fireman from the West Midlands, who has been reading Adrenamag’s articles on clay pigeon shooting. Steve, who has always wanted to shoot clays, and would like to organise a day’s shooting to celebrate his 50th birthday, also asked: ‘What simple tips can you give me about clay pigeon shooting. And should I have lessons before we go?’

Adrenamag took these queries to Tom, a 25-year veteran in teaching novices to shoot on stag-parties and corporate days out. Tom said: ‘I always say to people have a go at clay pigeon shooting – after all that’s the best lesson there is. Get the feel of the sport and see if you like it.’

‘Do you need a shot gun licence to shoot clays?’ Steve asked. ‘No,’ said Tom. ‘If you buy a gun and shoot regularly, then you will need one, but you will not need a licence for a day’s shoot.’

Tom’s tip for better clay pigeon shooting

1.     Listen to advice. Very basic, but we get a lot of guys – and it is guys – in stag parties who just want to blast off. Take the time out to listen and you will be a better shot.

2.     Keep an eye open. Find out which is your dominant eye – your instructor will help with this.

3.     Put your whole body into it. The skill of shooting is moving smoothly – not snatching. This means moving your whole body.

4.     Line up the clay. Watch the line of the clay – or bird as we say here – see how high it is above the trees, etc. That way you can track the line of flight.

5.     Calm down. Shooting is about lowering the pulse and being clinical.

While football hit a spectacular own goal with Sky Sport’s presenters Andy Gray and Richard Keys loosing their jobs over dismissive comments about women officials in football, Adrenamag asks if, when it comes to sexism, extreme sports can show the way forward to traditional sports like football? Unlike football, it doesn’t take long to find high-profile women at the top in the world of extreme sports. Here are some extreme sports stars who the former Sky Sports presenters may want to follow now they have more time on their hands.

1. Motor sport star Alice Powell. In January Alice Powell was named the British Woman Racing Drivers Club Elite Gold Star Winner for her success and achievement in 2010. It is the second year in succession she has won the award.

Presenting the award to the former karting star was the BBC1 Formula One TV presenter Jake Humphrey. Jake said: ‘I really do think it’s about time that women who are making waves in motor racing are recognised at the very top. So good luck in 2011.’

This year Alice hopes to compete in the Formula Renault UK Championship, which receives LIVE ITV coverage and crowds at the track that match figures of attendance at an average Premier League Football game. If you are a woman who is interested in karting and would like to know where Alice started click here.

2. Italian women clay pigeon shooters. Italy is home to some of the world’s top women clay pigeon shooters. Katiuscia Spada won the Skeet Women ISSF World Cup Final in Izmir, Turkey, in 2010. It’s not the first time the Italian police officer has been seen on the medal winners’ podium in the last three years; she won the Olympic silver medal in Beijing behind fellow Italian Chiara Cainero. Skeet is a clay pigeon discipline where clays are thrown by two machines for the shooter to kill. If you want to try clay pigeon shooting, click here.

Kristin Boese: Water sports star

3. Water sports super star, Kristin Boese. German Kristin Boese is a legend in women’s water sports. Twice women’s world kitesurfing champion, she has been nominated for world sailor of the year. The author of several books, she has also recently launched a modelling career. If you want to try water sports, click here.

4. Archery hot shot. Twenty-six year-old Nicky Hunt is targeting more medals in 2011. Finishing 2010 in number one position in the FITA world rankings, she helped the English team win the women’s compound team event then added the individual gold medal a day later. If you want to try archery click here.

5. Women skydivers. It’s known as the world’s biggest pink cloud with 181 women skydivers filling the Californian sky in 2009. Led by Kate Cooper-Jensen, one of the foremost skydivers in the world, Jump for the Cause was co-founded with Mallory Lewis, after her mother, legendary puppeteer Shari Lewis, lost her battle with cancer in 1998. Events in 1999, 2002 and 2005 raised a combined total of over $1 million and broke the previous world records with 119 women in 1999, 131 women in 2002,151 in 2005 and 181 women in 2009. Expect mountain biking to get ever more extreme and adventurous in the year ahead. Bikers are continually on the look out for new and more extreme challenges: both natural and urban. The above video shows the 35K mountain bike race down the volcano on Reunion Island in the Indian Ocean. Described as a Mega-Avalanche event, the competitors flow down the volcano like lava. Although it started over 15 years ago, the event has blasted off recently as top competitors and amateurs from around the world head for the French-speaking island.

In South America, the locals have developed their own extreme mountain biking events. The bikers descend through the narrow alleys of the Brazilian favelas, which are the shanty towns around Rio Janeiro. Its a breathtaking ride, with the screaming atmosphere adding to the theatre. The Mount 7 Psychosis down hill race in British Columbia is another major mountain bike challenge.

Closer to home, the Cwmcarn downhill course in South Wales is becoming increasingly popular as it offers the rocks and root obstacles enthusiasts demand. For mountain biking, click here.

How To Get Back Your Ex – flintoff and gough

TV viewers who watched former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff’s ITV4 show Freddie Flintoff Versus the World saw the birth of a new extreme sport – paintball and paragliding. Two extreme sports combined into one.

The former England all-rounder battled it out in the airspace in South America with ex-England cricketing colleague Darren Gough, although Freddie came off second best as he damaged his paintball gun when taking off in the paraglider. Which just goes to show there will be a raft of new techniques to master if it takes off over here.

Click here for paintball or here for paragliding. As yet there’s no plans to combine the sports in the UK – if that changes, we’ll let you know as soon as we do!

phil and shirley
It’s the wedding of the year. Yes, soap opera royalty – EastEnders’ Phil Mitchell (Steve McFadden) is reportedly marrying Queen Vic barmaid Shirley Carter (Linda Henry) on the same day as that other famous couple Prince William and Kate Middleton walk down the aisle – April 29. What a big day.

So what will the famous or infamous EastEnders’ hardman be doing for his stag weekend? Here’s a few stag party ideas for BBC scriptwriters to ponder over:

1. Clay Pigeon shooting. Phil is no stranger to firearms. ‘Who shot Phil’ was one of the show’s biggest storylines. Phil may need reminding, of course, that he is firing the gun, not being the target.

2. Rally Driving. Phil, who was involved in a high-speed car chase with his on-screen brother Grant (Ross Kemp) that was watched by over 19 million viewers, may like to remember his brother with a rally driving experience. This time without a splash in the Thames.

3. Zorbing. With armed robbery, a cocaine habit, adultery and attempted murder, to name but a few plot lines, Phil’s life is a proverbial roller coaster, so bouncing around in a zorb would be a sea of tranquillity for Phil and his friends. Or should we say friend?

4. Tank Driving. Phil’s screen brother Grant, actor Ross Kemp, left EastEnders to make real-life award-winning documentaries in Afghanistan, so Phil could display his military credentials by driving tanks – just in case he comes to a sticky end on the show and needs a second career.

5. Airsoft. Phil’s brother Grant is reportedly in Brazil. He is sure to return one day and no doubt he will be gunning for Phil, so a little training in tactics and team work on an airsoft course may come in handy. Just be sure not to invite Grant.

6. Ballooning. It is possible to see London’s skyline in a balloon. The ideal opportunity for Phil to reveal to his friends where he’s buried all the bodies of those friends who would have otherwise been at his stag party.

Airsoft’s Valentine’s Day Massacre https://adrenamag.com/airsofts-valentines-day-massacre/ https://adrenamag.com/airsofts-valentines-day-massacre/#respond Thu, 03 Feb 2011 16:03:04 +0000 http://adrenamag.com/?p=3158 Airsoft blasting ahead

The post Airsoft’s Valentine’s Day Massacre appeared first on ADRENAMAG.

]]>

According to Google, airsoft is set to perform a St Valentine’s Day massacre on the Internet as it tops the poll as the most searched for shooting activity term.

Airsoft, which uses replica guns firing plastic balls, is outgunning activities such as paintball, laser quest and clay pigeon shooting in online searches. A staggering 2.7 million people searched for airsoft in January, compared to just 1.8 million for the perennial favourite paintball. Airsoft originated in Japan in the late 1970s as the Far Eastern answer to paintball. So what is the big attraction? And why is airsoft blasting away the competition?

Gary, 20, a student from Sheffield, who recently started taking part in combat games of airsoft, says: ‘It’s the authentic feel of military combat that turns people on.’ Primary school teacher Sally, 27, has been taking part in airsoft games for a couple of years. ‘I started playing when my boyfriend’s company organised a corporate airsoft day, and just loved it,’ she said. ‘It’s a team sport which involves tactics and working together to beat the opponent. So it is a mental as well as a physical challenge.’

One big difference between paintball and airsoft is there’s no paint marks when a person is shot, so honesty is the only policy for these gun fighters. Gary believes it is part of the attraction of the sport. ‘It’s a bit like golf, it’s easy to cheat, but in my experience people are very honest. It’s considered really bad form to argue if you’ve been shot,’ he says.

The hot debate within airsoft is over the control of the replica guns. The UK Airsoft Sites Governing Body (UKASGB) which represents airsoft sites and is supported by Sport England, argues for controls on the use of replica guns rather than a ban. The UK Home Office currently classifies airsoft guns as Replica Imitation Firearms (RIFs), which restricts their use to exempted activities such as combat games. So firing airsoft guns at a site is legal but don’t carry them while you are in the supermarket. If you want to find out why is airsoft is out firing other sports, click here.

10 facts to fire-off about Airsoft

1. Airsoft guns fire 6mm plastic bullets at speeds between 100 and 328 feet per second

2. Airsoft replica guns are normally lighter than normal guns and cannot be turned into real firearms.

3. Airsoft started as the Japanese answer to paintball.

4. The power of airsoft guns is limited in the UK to 328 feet per second, which is the equivalent to flicking your skin with a finger, when fired from a safe distance.

5. Airsoft dealers currently operate a voluntary ban on the sale of airsoft guns to under 18s

6. Airsoft sites normally have a minimum age restriction of 12, under 16s need to be signed for by a parent or guardian

7. The plastic balls fired by airsoft guns are biodegradable.

8. The three types of airsoft gun are spring, electric and gas operated – all using compressed air

9. Combatants normally take a timeout when hit

10. Like paintball, face masks are worn
